Is Korra Related To Katara? Complete Family Tree

Though it has already been a decade since the last release of The Legend of Korra, the animated Avatar universe has not told us the proper family tree of Korra, leading to queries like whether she is related to Katara.

As there are a few family lineages in Avatarverse, many of the characters belonged to the same bloodline.

Thanks to that, many theories began surfacing online in correspondence to the show’s loose ends.

Avatar Studios Have Never Confirmed Korra And Katara Are Related!

Despite the popular theory, Avatar Studios has not released any official statements to confirm whether Korra and Katara are related.

Moreover, there is no evidence in either canon comic or animated series to prove or support the speculated theory.

However, some fan theories are so rational that the character might be related.

For instance, the Avatarverse has not explored the family lineage of Katara’s brother, Sokka. So, Korra could be a descendant of the Sokka, meaning she would be Katara’s niece.

Also, the speculation that Korra is related to Katara did not just appear out of nowhere. In The Legend of Korra, fans could not ignore how similar Korra looked to a young Katara.

Korra shares traits similar to Katara, like dark brown hair and brown skin tone. Besides that, both characters also dress up pretty similarly with the toned-down color palette.

Unfortunately, these similarities point out that both of them belong to the same race. As per the show, people from Southern and Northern water tribes tend to have such traits.

So, despite how rational the speculations may seem, Korra and Katara are not related, as per the official release.

Instead, they are related via the Avatar cycle, as Korra is the incarnation of the previous Avatar, Aang, the husband of Katara.

A complete family tree of Korra & Katara explained!

In Avatar: The Last Airbender, Katara’s family tree is described and shown more precisely.

Kanna, aka Gran Gran, is the grandmother of the Katara, who married an unknown man from the southern water tribe. Later, the couple had a son, Hakoda.

Hakoda married Kya and later became the chieftain of the Southern Water tribe. They welcomed children Sokka and Katara.

The animated show explores Katara’s family lineage. She married Aang and gave birth to three children, Bumi, Kya, and Tenzin.

The family of Katara plays a crucial role in The Legend of Korra as they help Korra become a full-fledged Avatar.

However, the show has yet to show who Sokka married and what happened to him. Further, even in the sequel show, there is no official evidence of his family lineage. It only showed that Sokka had passed away without any specific details.

Nevertheless, the Avatar sequel, The Legends of Korra, begins with the different leaders of the Southern Water Tribe, indicating time passage between the two series.

The main leaders of the Southern Water tribe had two sons, Tonraq and Unalaq.

Tonraq later married Senna, a waterbender; this is how the main character, Korra, was born.

Meanwhile, Unalaq, uncle of Korra, married Malina and had twins Eska and Desna.

So, perhaps the passage of time without information on what happened is the main reason for such speculations.

Regardless, Korra and Katara are not related biologically, at least with the available official information.
