Trey committed to playing college basketball at Purdue University in 2022, over offers from Indian, North Carolina, and Virginia.
He redshirted his first year on campus. The following season, he appeared in 35 games, averaging 4.5 points and 1.8 rebounds, making an immediate impact.
Against Utah State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, he finished with 18 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two blocks in a 106-67 victory.

Trey Kaufman Renn, 22, was born on August 19, 2002, in Sellersburg, Indiana, to his mother, Lara Renn, and his father, whose identity has been kept private.
His mother Lara, played basketball in high school and served as a teacher at Jeffersonville High School. She raised Trey as a single mother.
Despite being a single mother, Lara has always supported Trey in achieving his basketball dreams.
Trey and Lara have a close and unbreakable trust. They often spend quality time together, watching movies and exploring cities.
Once, Lara described Trey as his own toughest critic, citing the time in fifth grade when he tried to ground himself for forgetting to take out the trash.
In 2021, Lara Renn went to Floyd Central High School to watch her son Trey play for Silver Creek High School.
Trey Kaufmann’s Brother Became Target Of Racist Comments Made By Illinois Fans
Trey Kaufman has one younger brother, Jaylen Renn, 13, who was born in 2011 in Indiana, United States.
He shares a strong bond with his brother and even plays basketball during his free time.
Following No. 18 Purdue’s 88-80 road loss to Illinois on Friday, March 7, 2025, Boilermakers star forward Trey told reporters that his brother Jaylen was the target of racist comments made by Illinois fans. He said,
“I was informed after the game by my mom and my girlfriend that there were some racist comments being said toward my brother, as well as my family being cussed out and stuff like that,” “I just hope that the security, especially at Illinois, could be better.”

Later, Illinois athletics released a statement after the game, condensing any derogatory language from fans directed toward Purdue and its supporters.
On Saturday, Purdue officials said the school had “no comment” about Kaufman Renn’s allegations.
The Purdue Star, averaging 19.7 PPG and contending for All-Big Ten honors, said he will always defend his family in those moments and asked the Big Ten to address any fan behavior in the league that crosses the line.
