“I do have a statement. Why would I apologize when I put out a statement? My statement was clear,”

Speaking at a benefit for the Human Rights Campaign in Los Angeles, Crockett mocked Abbott, whose legs were paralyzed in a running accident in 1984. She said,

We in these hot a– Texas streets, honey. Y’all know we got Governor Hot Wheels down there, come on now! And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot a– mess, honey!”

Later, Crockett stated on social media regarding her comments, arguing that she had not been referring to Abott’s paralysis. She wrote,

“I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition—I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable. Literally, the next line I said was that he was a ‘Hot A** Mess,’ referencing his terrible policies. At no point did I mention or allude to his condition,”

You’ve probably heard me say I’m a proud PK…and it’s my daddy’s leadership and love in the church that raised me and inspires me to this day to be the best Congresswoman I can be. Happy #FathersDay to Pastor Joseph Crockett, all the dads of #TX30, and @RepJeffries, too!

In May 2021, through her Facebook handle, Jasmine said that her mother taught her to never back down from a fight worth fighting and to always look out for the underserved.

She wished Gwen a happy Mother’s Day on May 8, 2022, through her official Instagram handle. She wrote,

My mother grew up attending segregated schools. Just one generation later she’s watching as her daughter gets elected to the United States Congress. Amid this ongoing pandemic, women, and especially mothers, have been disproportionately impacted by our changing economy. As the Supreme Court barrels toward an assault on our reproductive rights, we must never forget: motherhood can be a gift, but it should always be a choice.
