Al Green, An African American Raised In The Segregated South With A Maid Mother And A Mechanic’s Helper Father

Green was removed from the House Chamber and escorted out by the sergeant-at-arms.

Many users on Twitter reacted to Al Green’s removal during Trump’s speech, with some noting that Al Green, despite being African American, may not fit the common perception of a Black man from America.

BREAKING: They just kicked African American Congressman Al Green out of Trump’s Speech.
Weird that Marjorie Taylor Greene was never removed when she went off at Biden’s SOTU a few years ago.

President Trump had only started his speech at a joint session of Congress on March 4, the night when Representative Al Green from Texas stood up to protest.

Highlights

  • People have mentioned they are unsure of Congressman Al Green’s ethnicity but admire him for representing his heritage, regardless of what it is.
  • Green grew up with his mother working as a maid and his father as a mechanic’s helper.
  • He shared his experiences of growing up in the segregated South while testifying in the Texas Senate.

While Trump praised his early achievements and boasted about his election victory, Green, 78, stood up, waved his cane, and began shouting.

He yelled, accusing Trump of having no right to cut Medicaid.

His protest was quickly interrupted by loud chants from angry Republican members. They shouted “U.S.A.! U.S.A.!” and clapped, followed by calls of “Sit down!” to quiet him down.

As President Trump spoke, Vice President JD Vance signaled for Green to be removed, while the crowd reacted with boos.

Well, Alexander N. Green is an American lawyer and politician who has represented Texas’s 9th congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2005.

Al Green Hails From Segregated South, Proudly Representing It

Folks have commented that they are unsure of Congressman Al Green’s ethnicity, but they respect him for being an unambiguous example of his heritage, whatever it may be.

Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on September 1, 1947, Green grew up in the segregated South.

He has spent his life fighting against discrimination and working to address America’s history of slavery.

Green’s parents- his mother a maid and his father a mechanic’s helper always motivated him to have a higher level of education.

Though he didn’t earn an undergraduate degree, he earned his law degree from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law at Texas Southern University in 1974.

Back in 2021, U.S. Rep. Al Gree, from Houston, testified in the Texas Senate about his experiences growing up in the segregated South.

He recalled being forced to sit at the back of buses, drink from separate water fountains marked “colored,” and how the Ku Klux Klan once burned a cross in his yard.

Still, Green made history as the first lawmaker to introduce and push for a vote on three articles of impeachment against President Donald J. Trump.

He voted in favor of all impeachment articles when the House passed them in 2019 and 2021.

In 2011, Green, with the support of his Texas Democratic Congressional colleagues and U.S. Senators from Texas, recommended Attorney Gregg Costa for a Federal District Court Judgeship.

Later, in 2014, Green also recommended Federal Magistrate George Hanks and Harris County District Court Judge Al Bennett for similar positions.

Additional Information

  • Green, a member of the Democratic Party, served as a justice of the peace in Harris County, Texas, from 1977 to 2004.
  • Following the 2012 election, Green held a press conference in Houston where he called for the outgoing Congress to cooperate on reforming the national budget.
  • He also shared a plan to invest in infrastructure across the country, which he believed would create jobs, unite the country, and strengthen the economy.
